the band blood on the wall has shirts just like that. almost got one from them, but then i had a vision of me wearing it in my eastside cleveland north collinwood neighborhood where the crip-led "folks" have popped back up for the first time since the mid-ninties. eh.

if you were to go in the hood in the middle of the night alone wearing it.. maybe. but i bet anyone who even knows what my art is or what bitnb is is.. is gonna hang out in a different locale. i think it's funny people are scared of it and provocative. sorta like richard hell wore a shirt with a big bulls eye right in the middle of his chest that said "PLEASE KILL ME" over the top in the east village circa 1978. :)

oh, okay, so its acceptable to wear a shirt that completely appropriates and exploits black culture if you're a white hipster living in a white neighbourhood.

i think people aren't so much "scared" of this shirt as they are "offended" by it. i do think this shirt is problematic, and i think it differs greatly from richard hell's "please kill me" shirt. that was just a scrappy gesture attempting to communicate his devil-may-care punk rock attitude.

i think the "blood" shirt is indicative of a huge problem with racism in america today-- the fact that upper middle class white kids feel like they're exempt from being racist because they don't explicitly hate minorities, commit hate crimes, etc. so they are free to wear t-shirts co-opting a lifestyle they have nothing to do with and will never have to deal with because they think icons of the blue-collar black American lifestyle are somehow "funny" or "cool".

i don't want to start commotion on your journal, but i think it is necessary to put this perspective out into a public forum.
